Experiences of New Zealand’s oral healthcare system

Over 2024, I spoke to 10 people from across Aotearoa New Zealand about their experiences of accessing dental care in our current system.

The report found that cost is a major barrier for people accessing dental care. The consequences for not accessing dental care are huge—and include physical pain, a loss of productivity, and low self-confidence. The high cost of oral healthcare has forced people to make hard decisions, such as skipping other essential medical treatments, going into debt, taking dental matters into their own hands, and working extra hours. This report found that the implementation of free, universal, Te Tiriti o Waitangi-consistent oral healthcare is essential for the wellbeing of all New Zealanders.

LGBTQ+ experiences during the pandemic

Over 2023, I worked on a project exploring LGBTQ+ experiences during the Covid19 pandemic. Funded by Internet NZ, I interviewed 21 people from across Aotearoa New Zealand about their experiences online and offline during the pandemic.

The report found that queer people did not feel safe on social media platforms to be their authentic selves - leading them to self-censor, not participate in public discussion, or keep their social media accounts private.

Misinformation and disinformation in Aotearoa

From late 2021 to early 2023 I worked for The Disinformation Project, when it investigated misinformation and disinformation in Aotearoa New Zealand and its consequences for individuals and society.

During my time, we published reports on the spread of mis- and disinformation during the lockdowns in late 2021, the Parliament Protest, online misogyny, and transphobia.
